On the way in to Christmas now, and our last home game in the league before Xmas Day saw us host Storrington. In the previous fixture, we won 4-1 through a few late goals in that game. Has to be said, a very different looking Lingfield side this time out. We come into this game after a 2-2 draw away at Southwick last Saturday. With Little Common beating Langney Wanderers on the same day, they extended their lead at the top and pushed us 8pts back.
We asserted pressure early on, with plenty of possession and patience with it. We created lots of chances from wide areas; Wetton's pace down the left and Wilford's delivery from the right. We made the breakthrough from them two, a Wilford corner met by Wetton for his 29th goal of the season, 1-0. With the ascendancy throughout the first half, the lead was doubled minutes later; high pressure from Wetton on the left was won back for Wilford to cross on a plate for Summers to volley home, 2-0. These were the only 2 goals of the half, however we had enough clear cut chances to kill the game off. Bakhit and Graves with the best of these. 2-0 HT
So job not fully done, 45 minutes of football left, and Storrington a side that only had the minority of possession, but tried to retain the ball and play out when they could. Nevertheless, it didn't stop Lingfield creating more chances, Wilford came very close from a free kick about 35 yards out. Other chances fell our way but nothing was hitting the back of the net today. Dembele was subbed on for Summers on the left, and bringing his pace and power to the game, opened up more chances. After a first sighter struck at the keeper; he got his goal with 10 minutes to go, a Heaton diag ball saw Swan's full back fall over trying to get to the ball, allowing time for Dembele to pick his spot. 3-0. A bitter finish for the Lingers as skipper Graves was sent off late for an alleged kick out, what seemed harsh, and provoked. However, he himself would admit it was all unnecessary. 3-0 the final score, by no means a thriller, but a professional job done, could've been a lot more. We defended very well when needed, only conceding the 1 shot all game. Thank you to all in association of Storrington FC.
We make it 10/10 at home this season, and going on the travel over the next few weeks we prove to be crucial games in regards to our promotion push. We travel to Steyning Town next week, arguably the strongest side we feel we played against so far, and now having to go to their place will be a strong test. Little Common comfortable winners today, Langney got their points in the end after edging a 9-goal game with Mile Oak. We did make ground on Wick as Ringmer took all 3 points which moves us within 1 point of them. Still playing chase on the top, but we must continue with this belief and attitude of what we want to achieve come the end of April/May next year. A big thanks to all supporters, and Mike Moore from DEphoto.TV for his media coverage of the game which can be found on his and our website.
