After last Saturday's round of matches there was just one catch up fixture remaining that had meaning at both ends of the table. Midhurst & Easebourne's game against Guernsey had to be abandoned due to a serious injury so the rematch was last Tuesday. Midhurst were one place below The Lingers in eighteenth place and looking to secure their place for next season. Guernsey were looking to keep their hopes of finishing as runners-up alive and securing home advantage in the play offs. Midhurst were losing 4-1 when the earlier game was called off but turned it round to win 3-0 and end any relegation worries. Where does that leave the division going into the final rounds?
Following Easter Monday's round of matches, Shoreham were relegated leaving the second relegation place to be decided. AFC Varndeanians secured their place with a win over us last Saturday and our derby win on Easter Monday meant that nineteenth placed Lancing could only pull level on points with us. Our two sides meet at Lancing this Saturday but with a goal difference better by 27, it would take something extraordinary for Lancing to overturn the deficit and overhaul us. There is also the final round of matches where we host relegated Shoreham while Lancing face a tough trip to Guernsey.
At the top of the table, the championship is between Steyning Town and Haywards Heath Town with Steyning needing four points from the final games to be certain to win a second title and return to the Isthmian League. Long time leaders Haywards Heath kept their title hopes alive by beating Steyning on Easter Monday and have a slightly better goal difference. The teams in the play offs have been settled with Guernsey, Horsham YM and Peacehaven & Telscombe having secured their spots but with the final finishing positions to be settled.
Division 1 still has two games to go but Godalming Town are already champions and promoted to Step 5. Six teams are battling to secure the four play off places – Infinity, Worthing United, Reigate Priory, Billingshurst, Arundel and AFC Walcountians. No doubt by next week that number will be reduced but none of these sides play each other in the final two rounds. At the other end of the table Copthorne have had a season from hell with just one win and three points from 32 games. Results really took a dive in November and last time out they shipped eleven goals against Reigate Priory. With clubs in Division 2 having met the ground grading requirements of Step 6, Copthorne will be relegated. Whether any other teams such as AFC Uckfield or whoever finishes third from bottom will be relegated lie with the SCFL at the end of the season.
In Division 2 last season, Rustington were easy champions but were rejected for promotion due to ground grading. To solve that problem they have been sharing at Wick this season but they are in competition with Hailsham Town for what might be one promotion place. The fixtures in Division 2 have obviously suffered badly from the Winter rains and are a bit of a mess. Two sides have completed their 28 games but over half the clubs have only played 24 or 25 games, including the top three of Hailsham Town, Rustington and TD Shipley who could all be champions.
With two sides promoted to Step 4 and the leagues being based on geography, we look up to see who could be potential new opponents for next season. East Grinstead have had a season as bad as Copthorne's with just six points from their 40 games and were relegated some time ago and bring us another local derby, possibly the Bank Holiday games. Also relegated from the South East Division are Beckenham Town and VCD Athletic but these will likely be headed into the SECFL or elsewhere. The fourth relegation spot is currently occupied by our champions of last season – Hassocks. They are just two points adrift of the three teams above them – Sheppey United, Erith Town and Hastings United. If they can get to safety, and with Hastings just needing a point, the other possible sides are not likely to come to the SCFL. However, across in the South Central Division one of the sides still not safe is Littlehampton Town who were our champions a few seasons back. Horndean and Fareham Town are already relegated and candidates for the Wessex League. Five points from safety are Combined Counties candidates Metropolitan Police while Littlehampton are three points behind a group of four teams. Of course, all three SCFL candidates could be relegated.
