LINGFIELD Under 9s achieved the distinction of finishing as runners-up at the Arsenal seven-a-side tournament at the home of the FA Cup winners.

Captain and Arsenal supporter Charlie S, with his four-year-old brother George as mascot, led his team out of the stadium tunnel at The Emirates.

Yet, after an injury to Lingfield goalkeeper Ryan W, saving bravely at a striker’s feet, the Godstone Road side had lost their first game against eventual winners Biggleswade Town 4-0. But the boys, including Webber, who recovered and played a part in the other games, rallied to play with great confidence. They won their next four matches 1-0 against Maypole Lions, thanks to a splendid top corner finish by Gunners’ fanatic John P, 1-0 versus Spalding United Youth, and 1-0 yet again against St Josephs 88 before beating Eastcotts 3-0. Incidentally, when absent, Webber was replaced in goal by Sam D who also played in defence and as a striker.

This came before losing eventually 2-0 in a close final to champions Biggleswade Town, Penfold having hit a post unluckily for Lingers after a brilliant Will Street effort was parried by the keeper.

So Lingers’ tournament goals were scored by Penfold, Smith and Street.

Joint coach Nick Sweeny said: “The boys exceeded expectations and with their skill and determination did our club proud. It was a memorable occasion for all of us who were involved from the village.”

As an added bonus, Lingfield received their runners-up trophies from Arsenal midfield legend Ray Parlour.

Lingers extended a special thank you to the parents, families and friends for their vocal support on the day. Manager Ivan Ericsson was also praised for organising the event for Lingers even though, along with goalkeeper son Michael, they were unfortunately unable to make the event due to a pre-booked holiday and kick-off times being moved forward. John Glancy, of Lingfield Minibuses, was also praised for taking the team to and from the north London stadium.
