There are just three fixtures remaining for our U23 side this season, starting this evening with an away fixture at the champions, Broadbridge Heath. We have yet to play them this season with scheduled matches having had to be postponed. It is a tough end to the season as we also have a trip to Horsham YM on Thursday 16 April for the final game, after a hosting the return match against Broadbridge Heath the Friday before. Horsham YM are just behind us in fourth but have four games still to play and are in the battle with us to finish runners up to a Broadbridge Heath side that have dropped just two points this season.
It has been a disjointed season due to the wet weather causing a lot of postponements as clubs look after their pitches for the more important First Team games. Due to this, the SCFL offered clubs the opportunity to drop out of their remaining games without incurring any penalty, especially with there being a number of First Team games to catch up on, particularly in Division 1. This has removed three fixtures from our schedule as we were due to visit Alfold, Roffey and Horsham Crusaders who play their games at Loxwood. These are recorded as away wins for us. You can see from the results page that we have also been handed wins over Loxwood and Storrington when they were unable to raise teams to come and play us. It is a shame when fixtures do not get played as it is the playing that matters most at this level given there is no promotion or relegation.
The Young Lingers currently sit in third in the table, a point behind the team we beat last Friday, Hassocks. We have been docked three points for playing an unregistered player against Horsham Crusaders otherwise we would be in second. If we can take points off the champions in our two matches against them we could be runners up but as the SCFL does not produce a whole season's fixtures it is hard to see who Hassocks and Horsham YM still have to play in all their remaining games and assess their chances.
Unfortunately Lingfield exited the League Cup in the first round in our only visit to Alfold this season, but the competition is still ongoing with Broadbridge Heath looking to emulate Hassocks last season with a cup and U23 North double. The Sussex FA also run an U23 cup that is still in progress but the Surrey FA choose not to do so and pit the U23 teams up against First Teams from Tier 10 clubs, as well as those in the amateur leagues such as The Honourable Artillery Company that we faced in our only match.
