With the FA Cup just days ahead Dan Burnett gives his thoughts on the cups

FA Cup
Are you optimistic for the FA Cup this year having been given the kindest draw for what looks to me to be since the 2012-13 competition with Step 5 opposition to start and then to follow. A chance to match our best performance of reaching the First Round Qualifying?

I am very optimistic about the FA Cup, this is my third season as a manager and going into the FA Cup with a good draw to start off with. It is a chance for the boys to express themselves. Last season we had Sevenoaks and I was still optimistic that we would beat them. You have to believe in your squad to go out and win. The year before we played Hassocks and it was a rebuilt squad really what with losing so many players. We had chances but we ended up on the losing side with a ‘freak’ own goal. The boys want to do well and we will prepare them enough to win the game and progress. If the draw is very nice to us I believe we can achieve our biggest achievement in the clubs history, with the squad we have.

FA Vase
What are your thoughts on being rewarded with entry to the FA Vase at the First Round Proper after our run to the Third Round Proper last time? It earns us two Saturdays off.

For me I want the boys to play week in week out but the boys that got us to the Third Round last season they deserved it with performances. Money means a lot to little clubs like us so we do not make any money on the rounds for which we have byes - which for me is wrong as we should due to our achievements. I am sure the league will give us league games on those two Saturdays, if not the boys will still have a light session to keep us going. Lingfield will play anyone and will not be afraid this season and who knows maybe we can go one round further. All I can say is we will take it one game at a time and see where we are come the end of season. Note: it looks like the SCFL have scheduled a match for us on one of qualifying round dates.

Peter Bentley Cup
We have not had a good run in the Peter Bentley Cup recently – would you like to do better in the competition this season if it falls right with league form and players?

The Peter Bentley Cup I actually really like - last season we had the toughest draw away to eventual winners Steyning Town. I would love to win it for the club and I am sure the club would like this trophy too. For me it depends when the games fall and who we have the following game. It also allows the boys that have not had game time to express themselves to me that they should be a part of the squad. Let us see where we are and the situations we are in when we play the cup competition.

Surrey Cup
The Surrey Cup produced one of our best performances last season only to lose out on penalties to a team that got to the quarter-finals. Are you looking forward to trying again this season even though it is hard for a team at Step 5 to win this cup.

I am looking forward to this season's Surrey Cup. A very testing competition this season with strong strong sides. You have Woking and Dorking that will put out strong sides this season I reckon to get their name back on the trophy, but you enter the competition to face teams like this so your players can express themselves against teams at a higher level. It also allows me to give players some more minutes depending on who we have available and our future games.
