Lingfield FC vs. Eastbourne Town FC
Sussex Veterans Challenge Cup Final
Date: Friday 15th April 2016
Kick-off: 7.15pm
Venue: Sussex County FA, Culver Road, Lancing, West Sussex, BN15 9AX
There are likely to be some famous faces on display when Lingfield and Eastbourne Town bid to become the first winners of the Sussex Veterans Challenge Cup final.
Lingfield have had an impressive passage to the final, scoring 24 goals in three ties. They hope to include both Ian Pearce and Nicky Forster in their starting line-up.
Defender Pearce won the Premier title with Blackburn Rovers in 1995 and also played in the top flight of English football for West Ham, Chelsea and Fulham.
Striker Forster is well known in Sussex for having captained the Albion in a three-year stay between 2007 and 2010, during which he scored 40 goals.
Lingfield probably need only one more win to secure their league title in the Worthing & Horsham Sunday League after winning five out of five, averaging more than four goals a game.
Manager Darren Maziere has run the veterans since they were formed five years ago but has not played this season after snapping his Achilles in the final game of last season. He is being assisted this season by Mark Clements.
Eastbourne Town formerly had a successful veterans team but that disbanded and was re-launched only this season after former player Max Dyer suggested he would be happy to take on the role of player-manager.
Dyer said: "It's been a fantastic first season and so far we're unbeaten. We'll also have another final to look forward to in the Eastbourne Veterans League, where we're likely to be facing Langney."
They too have a couple of ex-professionals in their line-up. Stuart Myall played 80 times for the Albion as a midfielder/defender and his dad Sid is something of a legend at Eastbourne Town, where a stand is named after him.
Another ex-Brighton midfielder now playing before slightly smaller crowds is Danny Simmonds, who played 18 times for his local professional club before carving out a successful non-League career with Hastings and Eastbourne Borough. He made more than 500 appearances for those two clubs in total.
Another well known face on the local scene is striker Tobi Hutchinson, who is something of a legend in County League football and as manager will be leading out his Ratton Rangers under-14s in a second successive county cup final appearance on Sunday.
The teams have had somewhat different passages to the final, with Lingfield winning their three ties comfortably but Eastbourne being given stern tests after a bye and walkover in the earlier rounds. They edged out Mile Oak 5-4 and then beat Horley 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Entry prices for the final are as follows:
£5.00 Adult (17+)
£3.00 Concession (65+ and students with valid student ID card)
FREE Child (16 and under)
