After another professional performance against Hailsham, getting the job done to move closer to the top; we took on Langney, probably seeing the 2 in form sides of the league. Langney recently taking all 3 points away at Wick on Saturday, and with Little Common in the league coming up, may have had a couple absences. The same goes for Lingfield, key players in Moore, Graves, Twig, Heaton and Summers all missing from the squad, saw Jenner, Naylor, Turner and Connolly feel the spots. Quite notable the pitch a tough surface to play on and with the wind gusting, an evening of conditions.
Langney certainly started the brighter, getting what was probably their first shot away inside 5-10minutes which flew passed Jenner, 1-0. It was 2 in fairly quick succession from a tame effort that went through the keeper. Lingfield tried to continue to play out, Langney engaging the press. Langney opened up a comfortable gap via a counter-attack lost on the edge on the edge of Wanderers box, and the centre-forward rounded the keeper to slide home; 3-0. The half finished with one of the only positives of the game, a quick Clements free kick found Connolly who curled one into the top corner, 3-1 and it finished that way. HT
The 2nd half began with Lingfield more comfortable in possession, starting to string a few more passes together, and got within 1. Clements slotted the ball behind the back four for Dembele to get onto, round the keeper and lash home, 3-2. Much in typical Lingfield fashion, we were the cause of our own downfall, Jenner's throw out of the back went to Langney and they punished to open the cushion back up. 4-2. A few knocks to Wetton and Clements saw them substituted, and Langney scored a couple late goals to kill the tie, 6-2 is finished, maybe not a 6-2 game, but on the overlook of proceedings, the right team won. Hard to travel far south on a midweek evening, without a usual, consistent squad. Credit to all players who did manage to feature, and Bob and Simon who had to work to even get a side of the game. Good Luck to Langney in the ventures in the cup; and we'll look forward to hosting the return league fixture in a couple months.
We are away at Southwick on Saturday, looking to make it 4 in a row in the league and continue to push for that title. Thank you to all travelling supporters, greatly appreciated.
