In true British style, a very contrasting day in terms of the weather from last weekend; a very hot, humid day.

As we were made aware roughly 50 times in their program, Lingfield hadn’t travelled to Hassocks very well in the past, but this was an opportunity to change that. Ransome returned to the squad after a short period out, Moore returned in between the sticks whilst the rest was unchanged from the home victory against Shoreham.

Early exchanges were very cagey, not much give in either side. We tried to get it down and dominate possession and took 5 minutes to get a foothold on it. From this, we’re did dictate possession but still no real openings either way. And no surprise that the first goal came from a nothing chance; TJ Stead received a diag pass well picked out by Fuller out on the wide left on the edge of the box who lashed a shot goal-wards. It appeared to just go straight towards the hands of the keeper but slipped through his grasp and over the line for an unusual lead. I think this goal allowed us to free up in our play and set the tone for the game. Hassocks didn’t stop trying to come forward, with spells of possession and opportunities to create chances but couldn’t quite produce anything in the final third. We doubled our lead about 10 minutes from the break; I toe-poked it forward and beyond their back line more ambitiously than anything else which Joel Alexander was first to react to. The keeper fancied himself a bit of a sweeper keeper at this point, but Alexander was first on the scene to take away, hold off any oncoming challenge from recovering defenders and slide home. We tried a few things to go again in the final moments of the half but nothing created. Hassocks made an opening late on to which the effort was stopped by the post. 0-2 HT

Hassocks set their stool out to press high in the first and second periods early on, and there was only going to be so long they could do that. That being said, skipper and goal scorer for them Johnson had the best of their chances early in the 2nd half with a header and shot both sliding past the post. Not taking these chances was only going to be costly. The further into the game we went, we controlled possession better; they squeezed higher in search of a goal, and it made the game stretched for them allowing us to be very dangerous in behind a high line. The game was all but put to bed when a sequence of possession saw Hodge break through the right-hand side and deliver a low cross across the 6-yard box which initially was missed by Connolly but buried by Ransome for what was 1 of his first touches. Another one for him to add to his goal per minute/game tally. The last 20 minutes was cruise control really from here, Hassocks seemed to have the wind knocked from their sails and we created a few more openings which with more composed football could’ve made the margin bigger. Not to mention a couple of very obvious penalty shouts which weren’t given. And the game was seen out, 0-3 FT. The scoreline could’ve have been very different, at 2-0, they score their chance and the game very much back on. From what I hear, the keeper was a physio in which their main man was sent off in the previous game. If, buts and maybes don’t really matter though. I felt as though of the 2 sides, the better on the day won. Good positives in the professionalism of how we went about our business. Alexander 2 in 2 starts; Ransome returns and scores. But the biggest for me, Moore in the sticks again and a very accomplished clean sheet. MoM for Stead out on the left with lots of energy going forward causing problems, and I thought Heaton was class in the middle retaining the ball all game and setting a tempo for us to play. A big thank you to Hassocks and all of its hospitality, and we look forward to seeing you guys again in League action soon.

A Quarter Final spot set up then; looks to be a home tie either against Arundel or Horsham YMCA who play on Tuesday night I believe.

Our next task is a return to the Lair; we want to continue our formidable record at our true home ground, but we come up against the only remaining unbeaten side in the league... Pagham. Haven’t personally seen them play, but the stats don’t lie, they’ve clearly got quality coming forward and can score at will. We will be right up for this one, and hopefully prove what we have to offer. Thanks for all the travelling support as per, it’s very appreciated!

And we hope to see you all Saturday. Up the Lingers
