Nine goals, four red cards and two penalties as Oakwood beat Bexhill
Southern Combination League Division One
Oakwood 7 Bexhill United 2
WITH nine goals, four red cards and two penalties the crowd at Tinsley Lane certainly had value for money on Saturday, but it was home-side Oakwood who grabbed the three points.
The Oaks and guests Bexhill United both finished the opening game of the Division One season with nine men, but Mark Gilbert’s men had scored seven of the day’s goals.
Bexhill took an early lead through a Chris Cummins-Bart free-kick before the teams came to boiling point when Darren Tidey put in a strong challenge on a Bexhill defender, which the opposition player reacted to. It did not take long for the majority of the players on the pitch to join in and eventually, Oakwood’s Tidey and Bexhill’s keeper Yankuba Camara and defender Daniel Cruikshank were given their marching orders.
The Oaks then began to dominate and from a corner, Grant Miller equalised before Jamie Lovegrove slotted past the makeshift keeper.
Bexhill were awarded a penalty for a foul by Gerald Manville but keeper Brendan Milborrow pulled off a fantastic save.
Charlie Adsett was next on the scores-sheet for Oakwood after a good ball from Miller, making it 3-1 at half-time.
Mark Gilbert Jnr made it 4-1 in the 57th minute and nearly scored the fifth, Jack Nourse getting the last touch on Gilbert’s shot to deflect it past the stand-in keeper.
The best goal of the game came after some silky passing between Clive Piller and Lovegrove who then found Gilbert, who side footed into the goal.
Bexhill showed great spirit and managed to score with nine minutes left on the clock.
It was 7-2 when a Bexhill attack left Milborrow stranded and last man back, Scott Faber, stopped the ball wit his arm, resulting in a fourth red card and another penalty.
Young Milborrow pulled off his second penalty save of an eventful match.
