The first half was a fairly uneventful affair, with both sides creating a fair number of chances but the Lingers looking stronger in possession. Despite a few good attempts and a penalty shout at both ends, neither side could break the deadlock and so we entered halftime with the score drawn at 0-0
The second half proved to be a different story from the first as Storrington came out of the gate looking much more confident than before. Their confidence was rewarded just minutes into the half when an unfortunate rebound gifted them with a golden chance. They knocked it across the box where all Connel Reid could do was spill it into the path of the onrushing striker.
Despite conceding the Lingers still looked strong, heading just wide from a corner shortly after the restart. However, it was this attacking spirit that landed them in trouble once again as two Storrington players burst away on the counter, passed across goal and tapped in their second of the day. Moments later, it was three as they once again used their pace to catch the defence on the counter.
These quick-fire strikes left the Lingers reeling, but the home side soon energised and pushed back to make the balance of the game a bit more even. Unfortunately the scoreline remained in Storrington’s favour, and it would get even more unbalanced when the away no. 11 ran through the midfield, beat the defence with his pace and slotted away his third goal of the match, and Storrington’s fourth.
Despite being 4-0 down, Lingfield grew into the game in the last quarter of an hour or so, creating a good number of chances and controlling possession more than they had for the majority of the second half. This good play was rewarded with a last minute penalty, which Matthew Gates converted emphatically. It came at a cost though, as Kerran Boylan received a red card in the aftermath.
