The Lingers started the game well, with high pressure causing St Francis to become pinned back in their own half. Heaton and Barnard won a number of key tackles in the centre making it hard for St Francis to play football. Despite this pressure the first chance fell to St Francis as they got in down the left only to be denied by top goalkeeping from Olly.
The Lingers continued to push for a goal with a number of crosses being delivered from either flanks. Finally on the 25th minute Sam Bell got in behind the St Francis defence, knocked the ball past the goal keeper to find his strike partner Brett Caiger, who calmly knocked the ball into the empty net. 1-0 Lingers. 10 Minutes later Lingfield struck again after a brilliant cross from TJ was met at the back post by Matt Burroughs to make the game 2-0. Lingfield continued to dominate until half time but were unable to add to the scoreline with Sam Bell coming the closest from 2 yards out.
The second half started where the first half finished with Lingfield pushing for more goals. The third goal almost came after a couple of minutes when another TJ cross was met again by Matt Burroughs only to be denied by the woodwork. Bell and Caiger continued to come close with half chances and after 62 minutes there was a third goal but it came against the run of play as a St Francis counter attack somehow made its way into the Lingers goal. The game could of gone either way from here but Lingfield were able to take it by the scruff of the neck and continued to dominate with both Doddsy and Mark spraying balls from the back into the wingers where cross after cross was being delivered into the box. Leach and TJ continued to overlap making life hard for the oppositions defence and this pressure eventually payed off after a floated cross from Matt Burroughs was met by Sam Bell on the volley leaving the keeper with no chance, 3-1. The Lingers had no intentions of sitting back and a fourth goal was added after another Matt Burroughs cross was sliced into the goal by the oppositions defender. Lingfield did not stop there and made it 5-1 through the in-form Dan Frith whose shot was deflected over the keeper into the far corner.
Lingfield made 3 substitutions bringing on Harry, Gates and Jake who all slotted into the team quickly. The Lingers continued to dominate possession and create chances right up until the final whistle. This outlined the strength in depth available for Lingfield and highlighted the potential for a very successful season. Up next for the Lingers is an away trip to newly promoted AFC Vardeanians.
