Saturday saw us welcome AFC Varndeanians (AFCV) to The Lair and presented us with the chance to build upon the result at Steyning Town with another three points. Not wanting to disappoint the home faithful the Lingers got off to a strong start dominating the early exchanges, and it wasn’t long before Steve Thompson gave the home side the lead. Brett Caiger reacted first to a header bouncing off the woodwork and found Steve Thompson’s thigh on the way to the back of the net. The home side continued to press and once again found the goal, this time from a corner after a second ball fell to Rory Woolston to steer home from inside the six-yard box. The pressure on the AFCV goal persisted and the pick of the goals then came after good work out on the right-hand side from Matt Burroughs saw a ball whipped in to Brett Caiger, who placed his header into the top corner to send Lingfield into the break three up.
HT Lingfield 3-0 AFC Varndeanians
To their credit AFCV came out and played much better in the second half and were eventually rewarded for their efforts when they pulled a goal back with just under twenty minutes to go. However, this only served to spark the home side back into action and Lingfield had several opportunities to put the game to bed, but a combination of poor decision making and a lack of composure in the final third saw the game remain 3-1. Finally substitute Aaron Stead put the game beyond doubt after latching onto a pass from Rory Woolston and expertly finishing into the bottom corner to seal the victory in the 90th minute.
Overall it was an assured performance from Lingfield and another three points on the board as the team looks to gather momentum moving into the busy festive period.
